Applicants to train to teach Religious Education will normally have a Religious Studies or Philosophy degree, or in some circumstances, a related subject such as Sociology with evidence of an interest in Religion or Philosophy. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in the non-statutory framework for Religious Education, especially where topics/religions have not been covered by their degree. Along with an awareness of issues in RE education, a desire to excite, stimulate and engage young people from 11-18 with the possibilities and pleasures open to them in learning about religion and from religion is a good starting point for an application.
Subject Pathway sessions are an opportunity for trainees to develop their subject knowledge and to gain a greater understanding of the role of Religious Education within the curriculum. Trainees are encouraged to participate actively in the usually lively discussions and to contribute ideas.
The weekly sessions are usually based at Sir Thomas Rich’s but frequently involve visits to places of worship, or an opportunity to meet members of faith communities to learn more about the impact of belief on practice. Trainees thoroughly enjoy our visit to the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, where they are able to witness at first hand the values of Sikhism expressed in daily life, as well as having the chance to share in the langar. Recent trips have also included Gloucester Cathedral which gave students ideas about what can be achieved in a place rich in history and artistic beauty. In addition, students have had the opportunity to gain insights into the monastic life with both a Christian monk from Prinknash Abbey and also with a former Buddhist monk.
Trainees start the year with three weeks of professional studies, a programme of lectures, workshops and expert speakers, to give a context to the course. By the end of September, trainees start their “Parent 1” placement and will be in school full time until mid-December. There are another two weeks of professional studies either side of Christmas. In January trainees start their “Twin” placement in a second school. There are more professional studies weeks before Easter then trainees return to their first school for their “Parent 2” placement. The final placement includes an enhancement week to give opportunities to experience particular aspects of teaching.
Stroud High School
Julie has been teaching for over 20 years and has had a range of experiences throughout her career, including Head of Houses, Head of Year and Trips/Enrichment Coordinator. The core of this experience is as a Teacher of RE, and Curriculum Team Leader for RE, roles which develop and enhance all the others. Julie is focused on ensuring that student learning is at the heart of what happens, taking part in Teaching and Learning research groups and CPD work with fellow CTLs. She is also an auditor for Oxford University Press, having previously written two KS3 RE textbooks for them.
Before taking up the post as GITEP RE Subject Leader, Julie contributed to the GITEP programme as a subject mentor and delivered sessions as part of the Training Manager programme. Julie is an Honorary Teaching Fellow of the University of Bristol.
