Candidates will normally have a degree in English or, in some circumstances, a related subject with other literary/linguistic/theatre/media background will be considered. Usually, although not exclusively, successful candidates have at least a 2:1 degree. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in terms of the National Curriculum, GCSE and A level requirements for English. Along with an awareness of educational issues, a desire to excite, stimulate and engage young people from 11-18 with the possibilities and pleasures open to them in studying English, is essential for any application.

The English course has an excellent reputation within Gloucestershire and beyond; our graduates are highly sought after in local schools and in neighbouring counties.

A fully funded Subject Knowledge Enhancement course is available.  This is online and varies in length depending on the depth of knowledge required.  The course is suitable for those who graduated some years ago or for those who did not have a high English literature element to their degree.

The course is highly interactive, challenging and stimulating and will require you to be committed, energetic and reflective. We aim to train and grow outstanding English teachers who are inquisitive about the issues surrounding English teaching and learning and who are creative yet resilient and meticulous in their approach.

The Subject Pathway course is designed to broaden and extend trainees’ knowledge of language, literature, drama, media and multimodal texts and their place in the secondary curriculum. We consider how young people learn to read, write, speak and listen and we examine and reflect upon strategies for developing these skills and competencies. We firmly believe in developing lifelong pupil pleasures in language and literature as well as preparing students for the world and workplace in the 21st century.

Overall, the course is a highly demanding yet enjoyable one. Most importantly, it will make you feel confident and highly prepared for your future role as an outstanding Teacher of English in the secondary classroom.

Trainees start the year with three weeks of professional studies, a programme of lectures, workshops and expert speakers, to give a context to the course.  By the end of September, trainees start their “Parent 1” placement and will be in school full time until mid-December.  There are another two weeks of professional studies either side of Christmas.  In January trainees start their “Twin” placement in a second school.  There are more professional studies weeks before Easter then trainees return to their first school for their “Parent 2” placement.  The final placement includes an enhancement week to give opportunities to experience particular aspects of teaching.

There are also weekly subject seminars, every Thursday, with trainees meeting with their Subject Leader and other trainees from their subject.
