Applicants will normally have a degree in Drama, Theatre Studies or, in some circumstances, a related subject with other theatre/media background.  Usually, although not exclusively, successful candidates have at least a 2:1 degree.  An awareness of educational issues, a desire to excite, stimulate and engage young people from 11-18 with the possibilities and pleasures open to them in exploring drama, is essential for any application.  Candidates will need to demonstrate that they have considered how to develop their subject knowledge in terms of the exam requirements at KS4 and 5. Our drama course has an excellent reputation within Gloucestershire and beyond; our graduates are highly sought after in local schools and in neighbouring counties.

Subject sessions, on Thursday afternoons at The Cotswold School, bring trainees together with the Subject Leader, Mim Monk, for an opportunity to learn more about the subject and the pedagogy of teaching drama.  Subject Pathway sessions are led not only by Mim but also by visiting practitioners and teachers from placement schools.

Sessions are delivered using practical strategies; speakers model approaches to teaching, learning and classroom management within drama spaces. Sessions allow time for discussion and reflection amongst the trainees.  Opportunities are sought for preparation to be put into practice during Subject Pathway sessions.

We consider how and why young people learn in, through and about drama and we examine strategies for developing these skills and competencies. We look to develop lifelong pupil pleasure in and appreciation of the arts as well as preparing students for the world and workplace in the 21st century.

Visits and trips extend trainees’ subject knowledge as well as providing ideas for school trips and, demonstrating first hand, the value of them.  Visits usually include Stratford upon Avon and London.

In January and April, some pathway sessions will be led by a subject tutor from the University of Bristol who will introduce the PGCE assignments on curriculum practice and curriculum research.  The University does not offer its own Drama PGCE so these assignments are specially designed for GITEP.

Trainees start the year with three weeks of professional studies, a programme of lectures, workshops and expert speakers, to give a context to the course.  By the end of September trainees start their “Parent 1” placement and will be in school full time until mid-December.

There are another two weeks of professional studies either side of Christmas.  In January trainees start their “Twin” placement in a second school.  There are more professional studies weeks before Easter then trainees return to their first school for their “Parent 2” placement.  The final placement includes an enhancement week to give opportunities to experience particular aspects of teaching.
